Netball presentation night slideshow for an Australian club

For Australian netball clubs, a way to collect a winter of Saturday photos and make a presentation night slideshow that features every player and every position.

Netball is the biggest team sport for Australian girls, and a winter Saturday at the association courts is a wall of club colours, umpires in white, and parents with folding chairs and thermoses. The season runs from grading in April to finals in late August, and clubs finish with presentation night in the club rooms or a function room at the local leagues club, where every team gets its trophies and certificates. A slideshow of the season is one of the best-loved parts of the night, if somebody makes it.

The catch with netball photos is the goal circle. Goal shooters and goal attacks stand still near the post, so they appear in focus in almost every family's photos. Wings, centres and defenders dart across thirds and end up as blurs. Here is how a team manager can turn that around.

How the netball year unfolds

  1. Grading rounds in April

Hold off until grading settles the team list, then pop the link into the team's group chat with a two-line explanation.

  2. Round one

Ask parents to send a few photos by Sunday night. First-round photos in fresh uniforms with tidy hair ribbons look lovely next to the finals photos.

  3. The June long weekend

With a week off, open the coverage list. Expect the goal keeper, wing defence and centre to be behind the shooters, and send the gentle reminder that names them.

  4. Finals in late August

Semi-finals and grand finals bring the best emotion. Ask a couple of parents to arrive early for the warm-up and the team circle.

  5. Two weeks out from presentation night

Stop taking new photos a few days before the night and watch the first version over a cup of tea.

Steps that work for netball

  1. Set the team up without numbers

Bibs show positions, and positions change from quarter to quarter, so paste first names only. Parents match photos to players by tagging their own daughter and any teammates they recognise.

  2. Check the association's photography rules

Associations and clubs collect photo consent at registration and many have rules about photography at the courts. Mark any player whose family has said no; her photos are never shown to other families or used in the slideshow.

  3. Photograph the bib change

Rotations between quarters are a gift. Players swap bibs at the bench, faces visible and still. One photo of the bib swap can include five or six players.

  4. Shoot the defensive end on purpose

Ask one parent each week to stand behind the defensive goal line for a quarter. Intercepts, rebounds and the goal keeper's arms over the shooter all come from that end.

  5. Let the first cut balance it, then add the finals

After the cut-off, rounds become chapters and every player reaches the same minimum. Rename the finals chapter, swap any photo a player might not like, and export.

How long should a netball slideshow be?

Netball teams carry 9 to 12 players, so even a short slideshow can be generous. Two and a half to three minutes gives each girl four appearances with team shots between. Club presentation nights often run a slideshow for every team from Netta to opens, so keeping to three minutes stops the evening running past bedtime for the younger teams.

The Classic style suits presentation night with warm tones and gentle movement. Players finishing junior netball can be marked as leavers for a short tribute at the end.

Presentation night, netball edition

Before the night

  • Check with the club whether teams play their slideshows in age order or at random.
  • Ask the venue for an HDMI connection near the stage, not at the back bar.
  • Seat the team near the screen so they can react; the reactions are half the fun.
  • Have the coach's award envelope ready to open straight after the slideshow.
  • Share the private link with families after the night.

Privacy and safeguarding

Faces are never scanned or recognised. Children are matched to photos by the tags their families add and the numbers on their jumper. Only first names are stored, location data is removed on the phone before upload, the season’s link is private and never appears in search engines, and anything inappropriate for a youth sports setting is hidden automatically. Any parent can report a photo, and the organiser has the final say on every photo in the video.

Netball questions

Can the club's Netta groups be included?

Yes, but give them their own season. Netta sessions are run differently from competition teams, and a short slideshow just for them is a sweet addition to presentation night.

Our coach is also a mum in the team. Can she upload for everyone?

Of course. Anyone with the link can add photos and tag the players in them.

Can we show it at the last training instead?

Yes. Export whenever it suits you and play it on a laptop or a TV; the private share link works anywhere.

Two girls share a first name. How do parents tell them apart?

The roster adds an initial automatically, so parents see "Chloe M." and "Chloe T." when they choose and tag.
